CHAFYN GROVE - SALISBURY
On Saturday Head of Maths, David Renham, was challenged to play 43 games of chess against children aged 7 to 13. He played 10 people at once going round the 10 boards moving instantly and once a game had finished a new challenger took to the board. Eventually the field was whittled down to just one, Year 8 student Charlie. Charlie hung on playing very well for a long time but finally he succumbed. The simultaneous display took nearly 4 and a half hours with David winning all 43 games.
The event raised £249 for charity (£200 going to the charity of the term Julia’s House). Hopefully this will become an annual event at the school.
Chess has recently enjoyed a higher profile at Chafyn. Younger pupils are taught the game by Mr Renham to help with their maths problem solving skills and the school team has had a successful run of wins against other local school teams.
