CHAFYN GROVE - SALISBURY
The U11 Chafyn Grove hockey team were the width of a post away from recording back to back wins in the IAPS National hockey finals. We hit the post in a goal mouth scramble late in the second half of the final against Altrincham Prep. Neither side managed to break the deadlock in normal time or after five minutes extra time, so the game went to the dreaded penalties. Altrincham kept their nerve to edge us out at the final hurdle.
Having won the Nationals in 2015, the 2016 team had fought their way through to the finals at Cranleigh School by winning the Regional tournament last month. In the morning they were placed in Group C and winning the group by recording 4 wins out of 4 (2-0 v New College; 2-1 v Perse Prep; 1-0 v Altrincham Prep; 3-0 v Hoe Bridge). In the afternoon there was a hard fought quarter final against Millfield which Chafyn won in extra time after scoring a ‘golden’ goal. A meeting with Dean Close in the semis followed and Chafyn ran out well deserved winners 3-1. Then came the final and those dreaded penalties!
A terrific performance overall and the squad should be very proud of their efforts.
