Senior Wessex Athletics Championships

We took 18 athletes to the annual Senior Wessex Athletics meeting at the Bournemouth Athletics Centre to compete against 24 prep schools from the Wessex region. It proved to be a very successful day with all the Chafyn athletes performing really well and representing the school in such a positive manner. They can all be extremely proud of their efforts and will undoubtedly have learnt a huge amount from this invaluable experience.
Highlights of the day included an excellent early performance in the day from Oli CS who won the 1500m in convincing fashion, smashing the championship record by an impressive 12s to gain national qualification. He also followed this up with a creditable 2nd place in the Javelin.  Amelia L. enjoyed a superb day and won both the 100m and high jump to seal her place at the Nationals and came 3rd in the 75m hurdles. Will M. came 2nd in the 200m after a gutsy performance and ran under the qualifying time to gain qualification. Millie R. also ran a great race in the 200m and finished 3rd in a quick final. Rosie R. put in a good performance in the discus to finish 4th, whilst Ella M. ran a good tactical race in the 1500m coming in 5th place. Ida G. should also be applauded for her spirited performances in both the 800m and 1500m. Ollie B.  performed very well in the 75m hurdles to finish in a pleasing 3rd position. Seb H. had a busy but highly rewarding day coming 5th in the final of the 100m  and 2nd in the 200m, but unfortunately just missed out on the qualifying time. While Thomas Newton ran a good race in a close run 75m hurdles final and finished in joint 2nd position, we will have to wait to see if he has qualified for the nationals.
The U13 Girls (Isca B. Cress B. Louisa M. Ella M.) earlier on in the day were unlucky not to qualify for the final after finishing one place outside the qualifiers. The event was capped off with some excellent performances in the relay finals. The U12 Girls (Millie R. Amelia L. Finty L, Rosie R.) ran a very respectable race to finish 6th. This left the U12 (Oli CS, Will M, Olli B, Angus B.) and U13 Boys (Seb H. Harry McN, Roly G, George F.) to bring an end to proceedings and they did not disappoint. The U12 team put in a great team performance to win in comfortable fashion and achieve a place at the Nationals. The U13 team followed suit and also won after an excellent performance, however, they will have to settle with the Wessex title as there is no U13 relay at the National Athletic Championships.

All in all it was a very pleasing day from the CGS Athletics team and all competitors should be congratulated for their performances throughout the day.
