CHAFYN GROVE - SALISBURY
The number of bats in the UK has reduced significantly during the last hundred years. There are many reasons for this, the main reason being the destruction of trees and woodlands to make way for roads and buildings. Chafyn Grove, led by Head Groundsman David Lawrence, have started a programme to help try and increase bat numbers, starting with making and erecting bat boxes. Bat boxes are artificial roosts designed to encourage bats into areas where there are few roosting sites. The bat boxes have been made in accordance with the Bat Conservation Trust recommendation, which is the Kent bat box design using roughly sawn Oak. We are hoping this will encourage bats back to the area and help the diversity in the surrounding area.
