CHAFYN GROVE - SALISBURY
On Monday 20th March Chafyn Grove 1st VII went to the National hockey finals at Millfield.
In a tight morning group where all four sides were well matched it came to the last game of the group to see who qualified alongside Feltonfleet. We needed to beat Belhaven and score at least two goals to pip Millfield for second place in the group. We left it late scoring three quick goals in the second half to win 3-0. A goal a piece for Oliver B, Oliver C-S and William M.
A quarter final against an extremely talented Cranleigh team was our reward. An early goal from William M gave us the momentum, but Cranleigh turned up the heat going close twice before levelling at half time. In the second half it was end to end and, with four minutes to go, William M sneaked a second in. The last four minutes seemed to take an eternity but despite a few scares we held on for a fabulous victory. Charlie T’s performance in goal was exceptional keeping us in the game on several occasions.
The semi-final was against Clifton College and we lost the game in the first two minutes. Poor marking in the D coupled with a bit of bad luck saw us go 2-0 down. We gave as good as we got for the rest of the game and went close a few times, but the ball was destined not to go in. Clifton played well and deserved their victory.
So National U13 semi-finalists is a great achievement. Seven of the ten squad members were a part of the 2015 U11 National Champions winning side too. They were so close to doing an amazing double!
