A very encouraging start to the new season

The boys travelled to Clifton for the first Rugby festival of the calendar year.  The team knew it was going to be a tough day as there were some of the best and biggest rugby schools participating.  The aim was to perform well, show commitment and to play hard regardless of the results, as for many, it was the first experience of 1st team rugby, in particular for the 5 yr 7 boys.  Apart from a disappointing five minute period against The Downs School, where we unacceptably conceded 4 very soft tries, the rest of the day was a huge success.

The highlight of the day was the first match against Caldicott school who are always very strong on the rugby field.  The boys performed superbly for the entire 30 minute match and deservedly won the game 12-5 with tries being score by Harry McN, Hugh N and a conversion from Tom C-S.  The win came at a cost, however, as we picked up injuries to three key players.  This made the remaining two matches against  St Johns and the Downs even harder.  Despite losing both games, the boys showed real character, heart and spirit – important attributes needed to be a good team.

The day was very rewarding and the boys will undoubtedly  be better players from this experience, we now must improve on the things we didn’t do quite so well.  I have no doubt that if we can maintain our passion and determination in defence, then the season should be a very good one.  I would like to say a special thank you to Mr. Renham for assisting throughout the day and all the parents for their superb support.  Oliver R also deserves  recognition for captaining the side superbly.

Awards for the day were as follows
Hal L (Player of the Day)
Seb H and Roly G (Hardest workers of the day)
William C (Biggest hit of the day)

Well done boys!
